Biafo Hisper Trek

The Biafo and Hispar Glaciers, located in the Karakoram mountain range of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, together form one of the world’s most extensive glacial systems outside the polar regions.

Biafo Glacier

  • Length: Approximately 67 kilometers (42 miles).

  • Location: Extends southeast from the central Karakoram crest, situated in the Hispar Valley of the Nagar District.

  • Significance: It is the world’s third-longest glacier outside the polar regions, following the Siachen Glacier and Tajikistan’s Fedchenko Glacier.

Hispar Glacier

  • Length: Approximately 49 kilometers (30 miles).

  • Location: Situated in the Hispar Valley of the Nagar District, flowing from east to west.

Confluence at Hispar La

  • Hispar La Pass: At an elevation of 5,128 meters (16,824 feet), this pass is where the Biafo and Hispar Glaciers converge.

  • Combined Length: Their union creates a continuous ice corridor stretching about 100 kilometers (62 miles), recognized as the world’s longest glacial system outside the polar regions.

Snow Lake (Lukpe Lawo)

  • Description: A high-altitude glacial basin situated at the head of the Biafo Glacier.

  • Dimensions: Spans approximately 16 kilometers in width.

  • Significance: Known for its depth of up to 1,600 meters, it is one of the world’s largest basins of snow and ice outside the polar regions.

Historical Exploration

  • In 1908, explorers Fanny Bullock Workman and her husband, William Hunter Workman, traversed the Hispar and Biafo Glaciers.

Day 1: Arrival in Islamabad

Arrive at Islamabad International Airport. Transfer to hotel for rest and briefing about the trek.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Taxila

Spend the day exploring the ancient city of Taxila, known for its archaeological significance and historical sites.

Day 3: Drive to Bisham

Elevation: 615 m (2,018 ft)
A scenic drive to Bisham, passing through lush landscapes and small towns along the Karakoram Highway.

Day 4: Drive to Skardu

Elevation: 2,228 m (7,310 ft)
Continue the journey to Skardu, the gateway to several high-altitude treks. Enjoy stunning views of mountains and rivers en route.

Day 5: Rest Day in Skardu

A day to relax, explore Skardu, and gather any necessary trekking supplies. Visit local markets and enjoy the town’s serene atmosphere.

Day 6: Drive to Askoli

Elevation: 3,100 m (10,170 ft)
Travel by 4×4 jeep to Askoli, the last village before the trek. Have lunch upon arrival and prepare for the trek ahead.

Day 7: Trek from Askoli to Mango

Begin the trek from Askoli, heading towards Mango. The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Day 8: Trek to Biantha

Elevation: 4,035 m (13,238 ft)
Duration: 5-6 hours
Continue trekking towards Biantha, traversing through rugged terrain and along glacial paths. Camp overnight at Biantha.

Day 9: Trek to Karfogoro

Elevation: 4,680 m (15,354 ft)
Duration: 6 hours
A challenging day as you ascend towards Karfogoro. The path involves glacier walking with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks.

Day 10: Trek to Hispar La Base Camp

Elevation: 4,590 m (15,059 ft)
Duration: 6 hours
Trek to the base camp of Hispar La, where you’ll prepare for the next day’s pass crossing. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the surrounding glaciers.

Day 11: Trek from Hispar La to Khani Basa

Cross Hispar La, a high mountain pass, and descend towards Khani Basa. This is one of the most exhilarating parts of the trek with stunning panoramic views.

Day 12: Trek to Yatmaru

Continue descending through beautiful valleys, making your way to Yatmaru. The landscape changes as you approach lower altitudes.

Day 13: Trek to Bitanmal

Elevation: 3,760 m (12,336 ft)
Duration: 6 hours
Trek to Bitanmal, a picturesque spot with lush green pastures. Set up camp and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

Day 14: Trek to Hisper Village

Complete the trek by reaching Hisper Village. This marks the end of the trekking portion, with a chance to celebrate your accomplishment with locals.

Day 15: Drive to Karimabad

Elevation: 2,438 m (7,999 ft)
Drive from Hisper Village to Karimabad, a beautiful town in the Hunza Valley. Explore the local culture and historic sites like Baltit Fort.

Day 16: Drive to Bisham

Retrace your journey along the Karakoram Highway to Bisham, enjoying the scenic drive.

Day 17: Drive to Islamabad Airport

Complete the journey with a drive back to Islamabad. Transfer to the airport for your departure, concluding the Biafo Hisper trek adventure.
